Using Message Boards to Find a Job

There are a wealth of sites focused on the Greater Columbia, SC area, many of which have message boards which can be helpful in your job search.  Used in the correct way, message boards can generate new job leads or furnish good advice about how to approach your career.  Here are a few tips when using message boards in your job search:

Think Industry Specific

When looking for a new position, think about websites in specific industries that match your interests.  If you’re a human resource professional, try searching for your local Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) website.  Employees looking for light industrial jobs in the Greater Columbia area might check out local manufacturing websites or portals. Yahoo Job Message Board allows you to post according to manufacturing and operations categories. It even allows you to drill down and view message boards specific to Columbia and surrounding areas.

Look for Open Positions on Specific Message Boards

Industry specific portals will often have message boards where human resource professionals can post openings as an alternative to newspaper ads or web postings.  Check the date as some of these message boards can be several days or weeks old.

CraigsList.org, which acts as a virtual community bulletin board for cities including Columbia, is the plugged-in place to find a job, find services or even a roommate specific to your location. Drill down to Craig's List Forums to post and view local message boards.

Let People Know What You’re Looking For

Message boards encourage you to post questions.  They may have general boards for this type of communication or it may be necessary to drill down and find your specific subject before posting your inquiry.  Columbia4kids is a local site which allows visitors to post inquiries on forums that range from moms who work at home to business postings that are specific to the Columbia area.

Networking

Not every interaction will lead to a job, however, through intelligent email dialogue; you might connect with the right decision maker.  Once you get a lead you’ll have a huge advantage: the common interest of an available job. When you meet for an interview you and your potential employer don't need to make small talk about the weather- you have a huge interest in common which can help start your relationship on the right foot.
