The South Carolina Employment Security Commission says that by 2008, industries in South Carolina will add over 315,000 jobs to the workforce, a 17.1 percent gain from the 1998 level of 1,856,820. They also state on their latest report that looking at the volume of jobs created, the business services sector takes first place with over 48,630 jobs added by 2008. That includes jobs for those entering the medical billing field. South Carolina’s need for those entering the health profession, including the administrative side of health care, will continue to increase at high rates.
Medical Billing and its related occupations are one of the fastest growing opportunities in health care. There are many opportunities in the Columbia, South Carolina area for this career path. Insurance companies and the government are spending more time and money researching and controlling claims’ fraud, abusive practices, and medical necessity issues. Because of this, insurance companies are hiring more, and doctors, hospitals, pharmacies, and other providers are also hiring.
Most companies and practices are looking for experience and or schooling that will protect them from legal pitfalls. Employers are seeking candidates who have taken classes in coding (including ICD-9 and CPT), HIPAA compliance, customer relations and appeals processing. There are HIPAA courses available online via HcPro which include HIPAA, Confidentiality and Privacy Practices, Overviews of HIPAA for Medical Staff, and Introduction to HIPAA Privacy and Security.
Positions are available in doctors’ offices, hospitals, pharmacies, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, insurance companies, and consulting firms. Duties include:
- Submitting electronic and paper claims
- Insurance Benefits Verification
- Insurance Claims Follow-up
- Payment Accounting
- Patient Invoicing
- Practice Reporting
- Patient "soft collections"
- Managed care authorization/referral tracking
- Provider credentialing / re-credentialing - the process of aiding the client to enter and/or update a managed care panel
- Help prepare and educate your clients on HIPAA & OIG compliance issues.
